TMD Design by an Entropy Index for Seismic Control of Tall Shear-Bending Buildings

This study proposes a new arrangement-tuning method to maximize the potential of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in decreasing seismic responses tall buildings. The relies on Grammian-based entropy index with physical meaning covariance white noise without involvement external inputs. A twelve-story RC frame-shear wall building was used as an example illustrate method. Indices were computed for TMDs placed different stories and tuning modes compared (colored) time histories. Results showed that greater reduction cases agree well story-drift reductions cases, despite differences step noises structural model types (pure shear vs. shear-bending), optimal TMD is not necessarily traditional “roof—1st mode tuning” case. Comparisons also made shear-bending under seven earthquake excitations. It found that, though are full-band effective controllers, index-selected still perform best three out earthquakes.
